The words for ‘I Know The Moonlight’ are an adaptation of a 19th century negro spiritual,
as found in the Bantam book “The Black Poets” edited by Dudley Randall, 1971. I was blown away by this flower of poetry with its clear message: at the end death equalizes all, master or slave, black or white, rich or poor.
"I 'll lie in the grave and stretch out my arms." Never, it seems to me, since man first lived and suffered, was his infinite longing for peace uttered more plaintively than in that line.
( Col. Thomas Wentworth Higginson of Boston)
