about

In 2019, Martine and I made a cycling trip through the south of England. We visited the Bloomsbury Group chapel in Berwick and Monk’s house and garden in Rodmell, home of Leonard and Virginia Woolf.
I usually read a lot when travelling, and I prefer reading stories related to the country, or the place itself with its famous (or unfamous) inhabitants.
That year in England I read ‘To The Lighthouse’, the 1927 novel by Virginia Woolf. It’s a fascinating book about insecurities, perception, absence, death, time passing, the complexity of human relationships, all set around the summer house of the Ramsey family on the Isle of Skye.

‘What is the meaning of life?
That was all, a simple question; one that that tended to close in on one with years. The great revelation had never come. The great revelation perhaps never did come. Instead there were little daily miracles, illuminations, matches struck unexpectedly in the dark; and here was one, here was one.’

These lines made me think about what the great Belgian Poet Herman de Coninck once wrote: ‘When the great happiness turns out to be unattainable, you should save as many small fortunes as possible’. I think that’s a great life lesson.
